Cybersecurity for Small Businesses: 5 Summer Audit Tips

Summer might be the season for patio meetings and long weekends, but it’s also the perfect time to give your cybersecurity a quick check-up. Cyber threats don’t take vacations, and small businesses are often a top target.

Here are 5 easy-but-effective tips to help you audit your cybersecurity this summer without breaking a sweat.

1. Update Your Software & Devices

Yes, we’re starting with the boring-but-essential. Outdated software is a hacker’s playground. Make sure all company devices, from desktops to tablets to Wi-Fi routers, are running the latest updates. Turn on automatic updates where possible so it’s one less thing to worry about.

💡 Bonus tip: Don’t forget third-party apps and plugins. They need love too.

2. Check Your Password Game

Are your passwords still “12345” or “companyname2020”? If so, we need to talk. Encourage staff to update passwords and use a password manager. Better yet, turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever you can, it's one of the easiest ways to block attacks.

🔒 Think of MFA as the sunscreen of cybersecurity, a little effort goes a long way.

3. Review Access Permissions

Employees come and go, roles change, and sometimes old logins stick around longer than they should. Review who has access to what systems, and remove any unnecessary or outdated permissions. It’s a simple step that closes a lot of doors for bad actors.

4. Test Your Backups

Having a backup is great. Knowing it actually works? Even better. Run a quick test to make sure your data backups are current, secure, and easy to restore. This is your safety net in case of ransomware or accidental “oops” moments.

💾 If you haven’t touched your backup plan since last summer, now’s the time.

5. Remind Your Team to Stay Sharp

Summer brain is real, and so are phishing scams. Send out a friendly reminder to your team about spotting suspicious emails, links, or texts. A quick refresher can stop a big mistake.

👀 Consider a fun phishing test to keep everyone on their toes.

Stay Chill, Stay Secure

A summer cybersecurity audit doesn’t have to be complicated; just a few small steps can make a big difference. If you need help reviewing your systems or setting up safer processes, Rivercity Tech is always here to help.

Let’s keep your business safe, sunny, and stress-free.
