“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

Why You Should Lock Your Computer When You Walk Away

It only takes a minute.

You head to the printer. Grab a coffee. Pop into a quick meeting.

Your computer stays behind, unlocked and open.

Most people don't think twice about it because they're surrounded by coworkers they trust. But an unlocked computer can create more problems than you might expect.

Whether it's an accidental email, a deleted file, access to confidential information, or someone making changes they shouldn't, an unattended device creates unnecessary risk.

The good news? This is one of the easiest security habits to build.

Here are five simple ways to keep your devices and data protected.

1. Get into the habit of locking your screen

Before you leave your desk, lock your computer. It takes seconds and prevents unauthorized access while you're away.

On Windows, press Windows + L.

On Mac, press Control + Command + Q.

2. Enable automatic screen locks

People get distracted. It happens.

Setting your device to automatically lock after a few minutes of inactivity adds an extra layer of protection when you forget.

3. Be mindful in shared spaces

Whether you're in the office, a coworking space, or a coffee shop, assume others can see what's on your screen.

Lock it whenever you step away.

4. Protect sensitive information

Client records, financial documents, employee information, and business data should never be left exposed on an unattended screen.

A quick lock helps keep private information private.

5. Lead by example

Security habits are contagious. When leaders and team members consistently lock their devices, it becomes part of the workplace culture.

Small habits often have the biggest impact.

Cybersecurity isn't always about complicated software or expensive tools.

Sometimes it's as simple as locking your screen before you walk away.

At Rivercity Tech, we help businesses build practical security habits that protect their people, data, and devices every day.

Because good security starts with the little things.

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

(TYYV) The Yada Yada Version:

Lock your computer whenever you step away, enable automatic screen locks, protect sensitive information and yada yada yada good security starts with simple habits.
