“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

Don't Wait for a Crash to Think About Backups

Nobody thinks about backups until the moment they desperately need one. The laptop won't turn on. The hard drive makes a noise it's never made before. A file gets deleted, overwritten, or lost to a spilled coffee, and suddenly years of photos, documents, or client files are just... gone.

It's one of those problems that's incredibly easy to prevent and genuinely painful to fix after the fact. And yet, for most people and a lot of small businesses, backups sit somewhere on the "I should really do that" list, right next to flossing more.

"It's saved on my computer" isn't a backup. If your files only exist in one place, they're one hiccup away from gone. A backup means a second copy, stored somewhere separate from the original, a different drive, a different location, ideally both.

Cloud storage makes this easier than it used to be. Services that automatically sync your files to the cloud mean you don't have to remember to manually back things up every week. Set it up once, and it just runs in the background, keeping a current copy of your work safe even if something happens to the device in front of you.

An external drive is still a smart backup too. Cloud and physical backups aren't either-or having both means you're covered even if one method fails or isn't accessible. A simple external drive with a scheduled backup routine is a solid second layer of protection.

For businesses, this matters even more. It's not just family photos on the line, it's client records, financial documents, years of work. A proper backup strategy for a business usually means regular automated backups, tested restores (so you know the backup actually works when needed), and a plan for what happens if something goes wrong.

The unglamorous truth about backups is that the best time to set one up is always today, before anything's happened because the day something does happen, it's already too late to start.

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

(TYYV) The Yada Yada Version:

A backup only matters before something goes wrong and yada yada yada waiting until after means it's already too late.
