The tech world has been struggling with a huge chip shortage for the last couple of years. But it’s not only tech businesses that are feeling the impact. Chips are in most electronic devices, and it’s hard to find an electronic device that doesn’t use a chip.
It’s not only laptops and desktop computers but also everyday household appliances like dishwashers, washing machines and even our cars! The chip shortage could end up impacting our modern lives. It all started in 2020 (yes, that year really was the gift that keeps on giving, right?!) and has been going on since. When COVID-19 (another gift in 2020) hit, production fell due to lockdowns and demand shot up. The pandemic isn’t the only factor that has disrupted chip production. More events, including extreme weather, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a massive factory fire have all contributed to the ongoing shortage.
According to experts, increasing chip production isn’t as easy as it sounds, it can take years to build a new factory as there are many unique production demands. Although it may not seem like a problem for you or your business right now, it’s always best to plan ahead as some of the technology you need to run your business may be in short supply.
For example, it might be easy to order in 2 or 3 laptops right now but if your business needs a large number of laptops, that might be more difficult to order. The unique production demands can take years to build a new factory. As well, some of the essential devices you rarely think about as they’re in the background, such as network switches, are currently much harder to get. As you strive to push your business to grow planning ahead is important. Industry experts believe that the chip shortage will last into next year, with the potential to last longer.
