“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

And Yada Yada Passwords... (Yes, We’re Going To Talk About It)

Let’s talk about it.

Passwords.

We know. You’re already tired.

You’ve got one for email. One for accounting. One for payroll. One for that one app you only use twice a year but cannot forget because the reset process takes 47 minutes and a small sacrifice.

And if we’re being honest… somewhere in there is still:

CompanyName123

Or worse.

Password1

No judgment. (Okay, maybe a little judgment. But lovingly.)

Here’s the thing: passwords are the front door to your business. And most small businesses are accidentally leaving that door unlocked.

Cybercriminals aren’t just targeting big corporations anymore. Automated bots scan for weak passwords all day long. They don’t care if you’re a 3-person office in Saskatoon or a 300-person company in Toronto. If your password is easy, they’re in.

And once they’re in?

  • Stolen client data
  • Locked files (hello, ransomware)
  • Fake invoices sent from your email
  • A very bad week

So what’s the fix?

It’s actually simpler than you think.

1. Stop trying to remember everything.

Use a password manager. It creates strong, random passwords and remembers them for you. No sticky notes required. No spreadsheets called “passwords_final_FINAL.xlsx”.

2. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Yes, it adds one extra step. Yes, it’s worth it. That tiny code on your phone is often the difference between “attempted breach” and “full-blown disaster.”

3. Ditch shared logins.

If five people are using the same username and password, it’s time for a change. Individual accounts = accountability and better security.

4. Make long > complicated.

A long passphrase like:
CoffeeBeforeChaosEveryMorning!
is stronger (and easier to remember) than:
P@55w0rd!

Security doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It just needs to be intentional.

At Rivercity Tech, we help businesses tighten things up without turning your office into a fortress of frustration. Good security should protect your business not slow it down.

If your passwords are currently living their best chaotic life… let’s fix that.

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

(TYYV) The Yada Yada Version:

Lock down your passwords, turn on MFA, use a password manager and yada yada yada… your business stays safe instead of starring in its own cyber horror story.
