Watch Out for These Sneaky Online Ad Scams

Have you ever clicked on an online ad without thinking twice?

You’re not alone. And that’s exactly what cybercriminals are counting on.

Malvertising, short for malicious advertising, is a sneaky way scammers trick people using online ads. These ads might look safe, but they’re designed to infect your device with malware, steal your personal info (like passwords), or even scam you out of money.

The scariest part? Sometimes, you don’t even have to click anything. Just loading a malicious ad in an outdated browser can be enough to put your device at risk.

The Top 3 Types of Malvertising:

  1. Scam Ads
These are the classic “Your computer is infected!” pop-ups. They urge you to call a number for help. Once you do, the scammer asks you to install software that gives them control of your computer. Then they charge you to fix a problem that doesn’t even exist.
  2. Fake Installers
These ads send you to lookalike websites that mimic popular brands. You think you’re downloading something safe, maybe a browser or antivirus update, but you’re actually installing malware.
  3. Drive-by Downloads
You don’t even have to click on these ads. If your browser isn’t updated, just viewing the ad can trigger a download that installs harmful software in the background.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Business

  • Think before you click: If an ad says your device is infected or urges you to act fast, be skeptical. How would a random ad know that?
  • Check the link: Hover over it. If it doesn’t lead to a familiar, trusted website, don’t click.
  • Keep your software updated: Especially your browser. Updates fix security holes that malvertisers often exploit.
  • Train your team: Employees are your first line of defence. Help them learn how to spot sketchy ads.

Scammers want you to trust without thinking. But taking a moment to question what you see online can protect you from serious headaches down the line.

Want to train your team to stay safe from scams like these? Let’s talk – we’re here to help.

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

Malvertising, or malicious online ads, can trick users into downloading malware or giving up sensitive info and yada yada yada, so make sure to stay alert, use updated browsers, and train your team!
