Have you ever opened a document or presentation and realized key information was trapped inside an image you couldn’t interpret? Maybe it was a complex chart or a photo with important details, but no helpful description to explain what you were seeing.
Microsoft is tackling that problem head-on with a new accessibility feature for Windows 11 called Describe Image.
Describe Image uses on-device AI to instantly generate detailed descriptions of any image, chart, or graph you select. The feature lives in the Click to Do menu on the new generation of Copilot+ PCs, Windows devices designed to run AI tasks locally.
The first time you use Describe Image, your computer will set up the necessary AI models. After that, everything happens right on your device, no internet connection required. That means your images and data stay private and secure, never leaving your PC.
Currently, Microsoft is rolling out the feature to Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel with Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Support for AMD and Intel Copilot+ devices is expected soon.
At first glance, Describe Image might seem like a small update. But its impact could be huge, especially for users with visual impairments. Imagine being able to understand a complex graph or image instantly, without needing someone else to explain it.
Even for users without accessibility needs, this feature can boost productivity. Picture a busy team member quickly scanning a report, Describe Image provides instant context without switching apps or asking for help.
It’s another example of how Microsoft is using AI to make technology more inclusive, efficient, and human-centered.
Accessibility tools like Describe Image aren’t just about compliance; they’re about connection. When employees can access information easily, they work better, collaborate more smoothly, and feel included. That’s good for your people and great for your business.
Windows 11 continues to roll out thoughtful improvements like this, bringing us closer to a world where technology adapts to people, not the other way around.
