“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

Let’s Talk Updates

Let’s guess.

You see the notification pop up:

“Update available.”

And your immediate reaction is:

“Remind me later.”

Later becomes tomorrow.
Tomorrow becomes next week.
Next week becomes… never.

We get it. Updates always seem to show up at the worst time. Right when you’re busy. Right when you’re in the middle of something important. Right when your computer decides, now is the moment.

So you ignore them.

But here’s the problem: those updates aren’t just about new features or moving buttons around to confuse you.

They’re often fixing security holes.

Real ones.

The kind cybercriminals actively look for.

When software companies release updates, they’re patching vulnerabilities that have already been discovered. Which means if you’re not updating… you’re leaving the door open.

Not wide open.

But open enough.

And that’s all it takes.

Here’s what ignoring updates can lead to:

  • Increased risk of cyber attacks
  • Slower, glitchier systems
  • Compatibility issues with other tools
  • That one app that suddenly just… stops working

Fun.

The good news? This is one of the easiest things to fix.

1. Turn on automatic updates

Let your systems handle it. Less thinking, more protection.

2. Restart your devices (yes, really)

We know. Nobody wants to. But many updates don’t fully apply until you restart.

3. Don’t ignore critical alerts

If something is flagged as urgent or security-related, don’t snooze it for a month.

4. Plan for it

If updates interrupt your workflow, schedule them at the end of the day or during slower hours.

Updates aren’t there to annoy you (even though they absolutely do). They’re there to keep your systems running smoothly and securely.

At Rivercity Tech, we help businesses manage updates without disrupting your day while still keeping everything protected behind the scenes.

Because “we’ll deal with it later” has a way of turning into “we should’ve dealt with it sooner.”

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

(TYYV) The Yada Yada Version:

Keep your systems updated, enable automatic updates, don’t ignore security patches and yada yada yada it’s a simple habit that protects your business from bigger problems down the road.
