“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

Let's Talk Backups

Let’s talk about something wildly unexciting.

Backups.

We know. You haven’t thought about them in months. Maybe years. Maybe ever.

Because everything’s working.

Until it’s not.

Here’s how this usually goes:

  • A file gets accidentally deleted.
  • A computer decides it’s done participating.
  • Ransomware shows up uninvited.
  • Someone spills coffee in a very dramatic way.

And suddenly everyone is asking the same question:

“Wait… do we have a backup?”

Silence.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: if your backup plan is “I think so?” that’s not a plan.

Backups aren’t about being dramatic. They’re about being prepared. Things fail. Humans click things. Hardware ages. Storms happen. Technology is wonderful… until it isn’t.

The good news? A proper backup setup isn’t complicated.

1. Automatic > Manual

If your backup requires someone to remember to do it, it’s not reliable. Backups should run automatically and consistently.

2. One copy is not enough

If your files only live in one place, that’s risky. A solid strategy includes multiple copies, ideally one offsite or in the cloud.

3. Test it (yes, really)

A backup that hasn’t been tested is just wishful thinking. You want to know it works before you actually need it.

4. Cloud doesn’t always mean protected

Just because you use Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace doesn’t mean you’re fully backed up forever. Retention limits exist. Deleted data doesn’t always stick around.

Backups are the seatbelt of your business. You hope you never need them, but you’ll be very glad they’re there if you do.

At Rivercity Tech, we help businesses set up backup systems that run quietly in the background. No drama. No daily babysitting. Just protection doing its job.

Because “we lost everything” is not a sentence you ever want to say out loud.

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

(TYYV) The Yada Yada Version:

Set up automatic backups, store them properly, test them regularly and yada yada yada… it will help your business survive the “oh no” moments.
