If you’ve used Incognito mode in Chrome (or InPrivate in Edge), you likely know it helps keep your browsing private, at least on your own device. It doesn’t save your history, cookies, or autofill data once the tab is closed.
But here’s something you might not know: until recently, anything you copied in Incognito mode, text, images, or URLs, could still end up in your Windows clipboard history. Even worse, if you had clipboard syncing turned on, that content could show up on other Windows devices you use.
So much for privacy, right?
Thankfully, Microsoft quietly fixed this. Now, if you copy something while in Incognito or InPrivate mode, it won’t be saved to your clipboard history or synced to the cloud. It’s a small change that makes a big difference, especially if you’re dealing with sensitive or confidential info.
This matters more than most people think. Maybe you're:
In these cases, keeping your clipboard private is just as important as clearing your browsing history.
Microsoft also added another subtle privacy upgrade: hiding media previews during Incognito sessions. Normally, if you watch a video, say on YouTube, Windows shows a preview when you adjust the volume or check the media controls. On the lock screen, it might even display the video’s title and thumbnail.
Now, if you’re using Incognito mode, Windows just says “A site is playing media.” No previews. No details. This way, someone glancing at your screen won’t accidentally see what you’re watching.
Together, these updates give users better control over their privacy when browsing locally. That said, Incognito mode still doesn’t hide your activity from your internet provider, your workplace network, or the websites you visit. It’s meant to protect your activity from others who use the same device, not make you invisible online.
