“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

A Messy Desktop Slows More Than Your Eyes

We all know the desktop. Maybe it's yours right now: a screenshot from three weeks ago, four half-finished Word documents, a PDF you meant to read, an installer you downloaded and never opened, and somewhere in the middle of it all, the folder you're actually trying to find.

It happens gradually. Nobody sits down and decides to turn their desktop into a junk drawer, it just accumulates, one "I'll move this later" at a time. But a cluttered desktop isn't just a visual headache. It can genuinely slow your computer down.

Every icon is a little bit of work. Your computer has to render and track each icon on your desktop, and depending on the file type, some of that takes more resources than you'd expect, especially with a lot of live thumbnails, like image previews. Hundreds of icons means hundreds of things being tracked, refreshed, and displayed every time you look at your screen.

It makes everything slower to find. Beyond performance, there's the simple time cost. Hunting through a sea of icons for one specific file eats up more minutes than most people realize, especially when it happens multiple times a day.

The fix doesn't take long. You don't need to overhaul your whole system. A few broad folders, "Work," "Personal," "To Sort" go a long way. Even just moving files off the desktop into your regular folder structure clears things up fast. Set a recurring 10-minute reminder every couple of weeks, and it never gets bad enough to feel like a project.

It's also a small security habit. A tidy desktop makes it easier to notice when something's off, a file you don't recognize, a program you didn't install, a shortcut that showed up out of nowhere. When there's less clutter to hide in, unusual things stand out faster.

None of this needs to happen all at once. Even clearing out the oldest, most obviously unnecessary files today is a solid start and future you, hunting for that one document next month, will be very grateful.

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

(TYYV) The Yada Yada Version:

That desktop covered in icons isn't just hard to look at it can actually slow your computer down, and yada yada yada luckily it's an easy fix.
