“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

Is That Chrome Extension Filled with Malware?

Google Chrome is widely used in businesses thanks to its functionality and the vast array of available extensions. These tools can enhance your browsing experience, blocking ads and reducing distractions. However, with great functionality comes a great risk: malware.

Malware, short for malicious software, is designed to cause harm to your computer, server, or network. Cybercriminals use malware to steal data, hijack systems, and even empty bank accounts. Given that Chrome holds about 65% of the browser market share, it's a prime target for these criminals.

While Google diligently monitors its Chrome Web Store, the risk of malicious extensions remains. A report found that 280 million people installed malware-infected Chrome extensions between July 2020 and February 2023. This staggering number underlines the need for vigilance.

Surprisingly, many malicious extensions stay on the Chrome Web Store for extended periods. On average, malware-filled extensions remain available for 380 days, while those with vulnerable code last about 1,248 days. One particularly notorious extension was downloadable for eight and a half years before being removed.

To protect yourself and your business from these threats, follow these five steps:

  1. External Reviews: Reviews on the Chrome Web Store can be unreliable. Instead, look for external reviews from trusted tech sites to judge an extension’s safety.
  2. Permissions: Be wary if an extension requests more permissions than necessary. Extensive access to your data or system could be a red flag.
  3. Security Software: Robust security software can catch malware before it causes harm, serving as your last line of defence.
  4. Necessity: Before installing any new software or extensions, consider if you really need it. Often, the same functionality can be achieved by visiting a website.
  5. Trusted Sources: Only install extensions from well-known and trusted providers. This significantly reduces the risk of downloading harmful extensions.

Despite Chrome’s popularity making it a target for cybercriminals, Google's security team works hard to review every extension. Yet, it's crucial to remain vigilant.

Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

(TYYV) The Yada Yada Version:

Be cautious when installing Chrome extensions, as they can contain malware, and yada yada yada; make sure to follow safety steps like checking external reviews, monitoring permissions, using security software, assessing necessity, and sticking to trusted sources.
