New research has revealed a surprising twist in the world of cybersecurity risks – it turns out that your tech-savvy younger employees might actually pose the most significant vulnerability to your organization.
Shocking, right? Let's delve into the details.
A recent survey gathered insights from over 6,500 employees worldwide, ensuring a nearly equal representation of different age groups and demographics. The findings were rather unsettling.
The study discovered that younger office workers, those aged 40 or under, tend to disregard standard password safety guidelines. It's hard to believe, but a staggering 34% of them admitted to using their birthdates as passwords, while only 19% of those over 40 resorted to such practices.
But that's not all.
The younger workforce also exhibited a concerning habit of using the same password across multiple devices, with 38% admitting to this risky behaviour.
Let's not even broach the subject of phishing scams. Shockingly, 23% of the younger demographic chose not to report the last phishing attempt they encountered, with their reasoning being, "I didn't think it was important."
One might assume that these younger employees understand the gravity of cybersecurity threats against businesses, but that's not entirely accurate.
While 23% and 22% of employees recognized ransomware and phishing as significant threats, the overall attitude toward cybersecurity leaves much to be desired.
Here's the eye-opener: a substantial number of those surveyed revealed that their organizations did NOT provide any mandatory cybersecurity training.
From the United States (30%) to the United Kingdom (17%), the Netherlands (32%), Japan (35%), India (31%), Germany (22%), France (43%), Australia (29%), and China (65%) – the statistics speak volumes.
So, should we really point fingers at our young workforce when it's evident that businesses aren't doing enough to equip their employees with essential cybersecurity skills?
It's high time we ceased treating cybersecurity as an afterthought and started investing in regular cybersecurity awareness training for everyone within our organizations. Yes, EVERYONE. Not just the tech team or the executives but each and every employee.
Ultimately, it's not only about safeguarding your business; it's about forging a safer digital world for all of us.
We can assist you in achieving this goal. Feel free to get in touch.
Until next time, keep Fit and Have fun!
