“You’re giving me the ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ routine? I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Nobody tells me it’s them not me; if it’s anybody, it’s me.”

Surveyed Employees Say They Do More Work When Working From Home

A lot of our workday productivity comes from Microsoft software. Can you imagine how you would get everything done without it? Unsurprisingly Microsoft conducted a huge new survey to discover more about productivity in the workplace—and some of the results were quite surprising. The survey was conducted on 20,000 people working for different businesses in 11 countries. According to the survey, 4 out of 5 employers believed that their staff were LESS productive when working from home. However, when staff were asked about their productivity working from home a massive 87% felt that they were MORE productive while working remotely.

So why is there such a big difference in opinion? Microsoft boss, Satya Nadella blames what he calls “productivity paranoia”. That means a gap between what employers expect from their people, and what employees feel. Maybe some bosses want to go back to the way we worked before 2020… but their people prefer the flexibility of today’s hybrid working. There is a lot to gain from less commuting and a better work/life balance.

We think that it all comes down to better communication between bosses and their employees. Bosses need to set clear and concise expectations for their employees and make sure they are doing regular check-ins and getting feedback if they feel that their staff isn't performing. But for employees to perform they need to have the right tools and technology in order for them to get the job done. No matter if they are in the office, working from home or a mix of both.

Are their devices suitable for the job they’re doing? Do they have suitable applications to communicate effectively and collaborate on projects? Take the time to check in with your employees and make sure they are happy with the tools and technology that they use every day. It also pays off to show your employees how much you trust and value them. If you show them this, they will be a more loyal and productive employee.
